Nokia aquires Symbian, will open it up

Posted by Unknown Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Nokia, previously a 48% owner in Symbian, has purchased the remaining stake for $411M with the intention of creating an open-sourced platform based off the merger of their S60 platform and the Symbian OS. No doubt feeling the pressure of Google's Open Handset Alliance and the Linux LiMo Foundation, the Symbian Foundation has been created and includes partners such as AT&T, Vodafone, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, Motorola, T-Mobile and others. Symbian currently runs on two thirds of the world's smartphones, but open platforms such as Android pose a real threat to market dominance. By unifying and opening the platform Nokia hopes to spur development and time to market for new features.
